On October 8, 9, and 10, 2004, a group of re-enactors will meet in Logan County, Kentucky for the 9th Annual Primitive Camp Meeting and Rendezvous at the Red River Meeting House. The event is held to commemorate and celebrate the Great Revival of 1800 that began at the Red River Meeting House, near Maulding's Fort. This area was known, at the time, as Rogues Harbor, a haven for robbers and murderers. The revival, which began at Red River and swept through the United States of that time, became known as the Second Great Awakening. At least five denominations, including the Cumberland Presbyterians and the Disciples of Christ, can trace their roots to the Second Great Awakening. People came from as far as one hundred miles away to attend the original four-day communion service at Red River, bringing with them supplies and equipment to allow them to stay for the full service. Quite a trip for that era!
This place of rare peace and beauty, the site of the reconstructed meeting house is in a grove of trees, mostly black walnut. Nearby lies an old cemetery with graves dating back to Revolutionary times. There is even the grave of a soldier of the Napoleonic Wars.
Participants of this event will come from many states to re-enact the living style of 1800 and to celebrate the bicentennial with period music, demonstrations and activities. There will be many things in which to participate; archery, dulcimer music lessons, tours of a Cheyenne teepee, hawk and skillet throwing competitions, cemetery tours, history lesson, demonstrations of how to make a fire using flint and steel, with church services nightly. Firewood and water are furnished, modern camping and RV parking is available, no camp fee or entry fee is charged. your family will truly enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and renewing of your spirit as you relax in this beautiful place. Also, your children will learn to appreciate history as they see it with their own eyes.
For those who place an emphasis on the spiritual aspects of life and on our Christian heritage, we heartily recommend this event, the anniversary of the revival at Red River Meeting House.
